BYD was pioneer in battery technology, but now, it has expanded into the electric vehicle market.
Build Your Dreams, or BYD, is a Shenzhen-based Chinese automaker. It was established in 1995 by Wang Chuanfu, who is a chemist, businessman, and entrepreneur.
One of Chuanfu’s motivations for starting his own business was to challenge Japan’s rechargeable batteries’ dominance in the export market. Because of this, China eventually overtook Japan as the world’s largest producer of rechargeable batteries.
BYD, which produces rechargeable batteries, has become the top provider of mobile phone batteries. And the majority of its income now comes from this.
Seeing potential in electric vehicles, Wang Chuanfu acquired the Chinese automaker Tsinchuan Automobile Co Ltd in 2002.
He went on to purchase additional failing automakers, using their existing plants to expand BYD into a global conglomerate.
BYD has been an innovator across several fields since its founding as a battery technology pioneer.
BYD claims that it has developed several technologies. These include vehicles powered by batteries, such as cars, buses, lorries, and forklifts; the SkyRail monorail system; solar panels; energy storage; and technological gadgets.
It is presently the world’s fourth-biggest battery producer and one of the largest producers of electric vehicles. And now, at last, BYD’s lofty goals are coming true.
Currently, the market places the firm’s worth at 950.77 billion Hong Kong dollars, which is about 121.16 billion dollars. In addition, its dominance is no longer confined to the Chinese market alone, since it has spread around the globe.
In 2008, Warren Buffett, a self-made billionaire, became one of the company’s most important shareholders. And he has a 7.73% stake in the business.
BYD has only been selling vehicles for a short time. However, in the coming years, it intends to expand its car sales to various markets, including Australia, Europe, and North America.
Experts say that BYD is a master innovator.
There are many other innovative electric vehicle manufacturers besides Tesla. And BYD is a major player in the Chinese auto industry.
In the first half of 2022, it sold over 2.18 million EV passenger vehicles. On the other hand, Tesla only sold less than a million during the same period.
BYD’s patent portfolio has played a significant role in the company’s success. Compared to the other top 20 Chinese firms working on the subject of new energy, it has the most patents, with 9,426.
When it comes to battery technology, BYD is at the forefront. It has more than 21,000 awarded patents in the electrical, automotive, and rail transportation battery industries.
It also has more researchers and developers working on battery technologies than any other Chinese company.
The establishment of a strong brand, as well as the market for new energy, requires extensive scientific research. And BYD’s cutting-edge technology has broken down barriers in the industry, making it a prominent player.
Now, an important step was taken by BYD to improve its supply chain. The company said its OEM distribution division was separated from its battery division.
Furthermore, it joined with other industry heavyweights such as Mercedes and Toyota. And as a result, it will be able to sell its technologies on a global scale.
BYD has three major offerings.
The EV market advanced dramatically in 2021 when BYD released its “big three.” I’m talking about the DM-I super hybrid, its E- platform, and its blade battery.
In a 100-kilometer test, the DM-I Super hybrid averaged 3.80 kilometers per gallon. This lays a solid foundation for building the next generation of hybrid automobiles.
