For China’s automotive semiconductor industry, if the key word in 2021 is the lack of chips, 2022 is domestic substitution.

In negotiations that ended on January 27, Japan and the Netherlands have reached an agreement with the United States to limit the export of advanced chip-making machinery to China.

The agreement will expand the export control measures adopted by the United States in October last year to companies in the Netherlands and Japan, including Dutch semiconductor equipment maker ASML, Japan’s large optical instrument maker Nikon Corp and semiconductor manufacturing equipment giant Tokyo Electron Ltd.

In the past two years, Chinese car companies have mainly lacked domestic alternatives to car-grade MCU chips.
